The Emmaus Initiative
A New Path to Career Growth — Built on Accompaniment
The Problem We Can’t Ignore
The skills leading to greater fulfillment in work and in life are not technical in nature. They are foundational and are typically reserved for those who hold a four-year college degree. Unfortunately, this leaves millions worldwide who lack access to these important skills. The Emmaus Initiative addresses this problem. Designed, developed, and tested in partnership with Georgetown University, Emmaus represents a competency-based postsecondary education model designed to bridge the gap between technical training and long-term workplace success. It integrates liberal arts learning, Ignatian pedagogy, and skills-based training into a holistic educational experience that prepares learners for more meaningful, financially sustainable careers.
Emmaus is more than job training. It is a journey of professional and personal formation that focuses on:
- Entry into stable employment
- Advancement within current role
- Pathways toward long-term, meaningful careers
- Avenues for developing as leaders
What Makes Emmaus Different?
Emmaus focuses on the foundational workplace skills that employers consistently value:
- Critical thinking and problem-solving
- Interpersonal communication
- Teamwork and collaboration
- Conflict resolution
- Professionalism
- Self-awareness and mindfulness
These skills are often embedded within traditional four-year degrees. Emmaus makes them accessible — without requiring one.
The Student Journey

Program Stages
Preparing for Success
Students begin by developing self-awareness and emotional intelligence, the foundation for professional growth.
Thriving at Work
Participants build practical workplace skills and learn how to navigate real-world challenges with confidence and resilience.
Leading From Where You Are
Students cultivate leadership habits rooted in professionalism, responsibility, and service — regardless of job title.
Each stage builds upon the last, creating measurable growth and lasting transformation.
Built on Ignatian Pedagogy
Emmaus is grounded in the centuries-old framework of Ignatian pedagogy, a formation model refined within the Jesuit educational tradition and embodied by institutions such as Georgetown University. At its core, Emmaus is built on accompaniment. We believe transformation does not happen alone. It happens when someone walks with you.
This approach emphasizes:
- Understanding each student’s lived experience
- Structured reflection
- Meaningful action
- Ongoing evaluation and growth
Instructors are not lecturers.
They are guides.
They walk alongside students, creating an environment where potential can flourish.
Professionalism Reimagined
Emmaus reframes professionalism in a powerful way:
Professionalism is not about your title.
It’s about how you show up.
It’s a mindset available to anyone, in any role.
Through guided reflection and applied case studies, students learn how to practice professionalism in real-life scenarios, building confidence before stepping into higher levels of responsibility.
